Byers Canyon Shooting Range to close for season

Colorado Parks and Wildlife is advising recreational shooters that the Byers Canyon Shooting Range in Hot Sulphur Springs will close for winter beginning Jan. 2, 2018. The annual, temporary closure protects wintering elk and deer herds now moving down from higher altitudes to find forage in lower elevation habitat, including shooting range property.

Wildlife officials remind the public to respect all seasonal closures and give wildlife plenty of space during winter, or they could face fines.

Wildlife officials plan to reopen the shooting range by April 30, 2018.

“Human-caused stress during winter can lead to higher wildlife mortality due to increased animal activity, including the deaths of animals due to car and train collisions,” said CPW’s Wildlife Technician Ben Gallowich of Hot Sulphur Springs. “This closure and others like it around the state exist to keep human activity at a minimum during the most stressful time of the year for big game.”

According to wildlife officials, the closure also benefits area residents by reducing the number of wintering elk and deer forced onto private land in search of safety and food.

“That can lead to conflicts and game damage, so it preferable that the animals stay on their traditional winter range,” said Gallowich.

CPW’s Byers Canyon Shooting Range is very popular with sportsmen, including many shooters from the Front Range due to its proximity to the Denver metro area.
