A forum for candidates running for the Grand Lake Board of Trustees was held recently at the Grand Lake Fire Protection District’s Fire Station in Grand Lake.

The forum, hosted by the Grand Lake Women’s Club, was held on March 15 and was moderated by Neal Cross. The purpose of the forum was to provide community members and local voters with an opportunity to hear from the candidates themselves on various issues affecting the community. The forum featured candidates running for the Mayor’s seat as well as those running for Town Trustee.

The forum kicked off with opening statements from the candidates themselves. Prior to the start of the forum event organizers provided all the candidates with two specific questions; one regarding how to improve economic conditions in the community and another covering town codes/regulations and if the candidates felt any were obsolete and needed to be eliminated.

Each candidate was given two minutes to provide prepared responses to both questions. After the prepared questions segment of the forum additional questions collected from forum attendees were gathered by a Question Panel and given to the moderator who in turn directed the questions to the candidates.

Questions from attendees covered a broad set of topics from community services for senior citizens to uses for the Grand Lake Center, formerly the Grand Lake Elementary School, to questions over how elected candidates would handle conflicts of interest and other personal issues. The Question Panel who selected the questions from the audience was made up of Jean Cross, Emily Troutman and Pat Person.

The forum wrapped up with closing statements from the candidates. Each candidate was given two minutes for their closing statement and an additional minute to detail what they felt were the top three issues Grand Lake would face over the coming years.

Election Day in Grand Lake is Tuesday April 5. A polling station inside the Board of Trustees’ Chambers inside Grand Lake Town Hall will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Voters in Grand Lake can take advantage of early/absentee voting all this week, with early voting being done at the Grand Lake Town Hall.

Running for Mayor in Grand Lake in 2016 are Judy Burke and James Peterson. Candidates for Town Trustee include: Dustin Barnes, Jim Gasner, Tom Goodfellow, Stephan Kudron and Kathy Lewis.
