2013 Bird count by the numbers

2,196 — total individual birds counted

40 — total bird species counted

69 — record number of volunteers participating

97.35 — total clocked effort in hours

A record number of volunteers turned out to help the U.S. Forest Service during its Christmas Bird Count, providing critical data on birds from around the world.

The 69 participants also amassed a record effort, spending 97 hours to count nearly 2,200 different birds and 40 bird species during the count on Dec. 14. Volunteers help the U.S. Forest Service Sulphur Ranger District by tallying observed birds from cars or while skiing and snowshoeing. The National Audubon Society and other organizations use the counts to assess the health of bird populations around the world.

Highlights from the 2013 county include double-crested cormorants, northern flickers, American robin and a flock of bohemian waxwings. The year’s high counts go to volunteers Doug and Susie Buttery, who counted 19 species in Legacy Park, and Brad Clements and Randy Sue Fosha who counted the most birds in downtown Granby at 755 individuals.
