Climbers near Silverthorne rescued by helicopters Monday
Summit Daily News
Two Summit County residents were evacuated safely by helicopter off The Thorn north of Silverthorne in the Gore Range Monday. Both men were unharmed.
The two climbers, ages 44 and 28, were ascending without technical gear in a couloir when the leader got stuck at about 12,000 feet. The second man was able to get cell phone coverage and call for help.
The call went in around 11:30 a.m. Monday morning; the Summit County Rescue Group responded with four members at 11:50. The group was able to get Flight For Life to assist, which saved the mission about four or five hours, according to rescue group spokesman Jim Koegel.
The stuck climber was accessed at about 2 p.m., and lowered down around 2:30. He had no injuries, but was cold.
A second Black Hawk helicopter was called in from the High Altitude Training Center in Eagle to assist with the rescue and fly the group out.
