Col. George E. Rippey passes away

Col. George E. Rippey, Retired, U. S. Army, age 91, passed away Thursday, April 15, 2010, in San Antonio, Texas. George was born on Nov. 20, 1918, in Pleasant Hill, Mo., to George E. Rippey Sr. and Juliet McCall Rippey. He grew up in Sedalia, Mo., where his father was chief clerk for the Missouri Pacific Railroad. George Sr. and Juliet moved to Granby in 1948, where the younger George would visit when possible with his family amid his many military assignments. He earned his degree in electrical engineering from University of Kansas. Called to active duty from ROTC in 1940, he served during WW II in various units as a Signal Corps officer in North Africa, Italy, France and Germany. Following the war he was a transmission engineer for the Long Lines Department of AT&T before being recalled to active duty in 1947. He completed his 30 years military service and retired on Aug. 1, 1970. He was recognized in Who’s Who in Engineering and remained active with professional associations, traveling, teaching, and consulting. He is preceded in death by his first wife, Geraldine G. Rippey; second wife, Margaret H. Kerr Rippey; daughter, Vivian “Sandy” Rippey; sister, Patricia Geminden; brother, Edwin Townley; and niece Julie M. Sneddon. Survivors include his daughter, Lorraine R. Babcock of San Antonio and grandchildren, Andrew Babcock, Chris Babcock and Kelley Babcock all of San Antonio.A Memorial Gathering will take place at the Forum at Lincoln Heights, San Antonio, Texas, on Monday, May 10, 2010, at 1 p.m. The Military Funeral with Honors graveside service will follow at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery at 2:30 p.m.In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Warrior Family Support Center, 3138 Rawley E.
