Colo. Education Board approves new standards

DENVER (AP) – The Colorado Board of Education has approved new teaching standards to compete for “Race to the Top” education funding.

The vote came Monday, the deadline for Colorado’s application to compete for up to $175 million in federal funding over four years.

More than 500 people sent letters to the board urging them to vote against adoption of the common core standards in math and language arts, saying they allow other states to determine curriculum for Colorado students.

Supporters said the new standards match up with Colorado’s own standards adopted over the past decade.
