Colorado dog owners told to keep pets away from deer

MONTROSE, Colo. (AP) – Colorado officials are reminding people to keep their pets under control in the winter.

The Colorado Division of Wildlife said Tuesday that it’s been receiving reports of dogs attacking deer, elk and bighorn sheep.

Big game animals are at their weakest and most vulnerable this time of year when they’re in survival mode and need to conserve energy.

Law enforcement officers and landowners are allowed to shoot dogs if they are seen chasing or harassing wildlife or livestock. Anyone who sees a dog hunting deer or other wildlife is encouraged to call the local animal control or other local law enforcement agencies.
