Colorado GOP chair questions alleged gubernatorial threat
November 30, 2009
DENVER (AP) – The head of Colorado’s Republican Party is asking Denver Police Chief Gerry Whitman to explain alleged threats to Gov. Bill Ritter during his 2006 campaign.
Dick Wadhams says the public deserves answers after President Obama’s nominee for U.S. attorney, Stephanie Villafuerte, said conversations she had with others during the campaign were likely about a security threat to Ritter. She says the talks weren’t about accessing a restricted federal database to run a check on an illegal immigrant whose history was used in a campaign ad attacking Ritter.
Accessing the police database for a political campaign is illegal.
Whitman’s office hasn’t commented on Wadham’s request.
