Colorado lawmaker breaks gavel, blames budget cuts

DENVER (AP) – Republican state Rep. Frank McNulty, the new speaker of the Colorado House, is learning the consequences of being a little too enthusiastic with the legislative gavel.

McNulty joked Wednesday that he was “gavel-happy” after mistakenly slamming the gavel just before a lawmaker got to the lectern to speak.

Later, the head of the gavel fell off after McNulty pounded it after a vote, prompting laughter from his colleagues.

“Darn budget cuts,” McNulty quipped.
