Colorado lawmakers begin debate over redistricting

DENVER (AP) – Traveling the state and holding hearings on congressional redistricting was the easy part. Now Colorado lawmakers begin the hard part of trying to redraw the lines to get a map that passes legal muster.

Democrats have offered six maps and Republicans five maps that they saw for the first time last week.

The committee meets again on Tuesday to try to figure out how to divide up 750,000 new voters so all districts have nearly the same population and interests.

A decade ago, it took seven years and a ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court to get it done.

During the last election, Republicans picked up two seats in Colorado, giving them a 4-3 majority, and Democrats would like to win back some of those spots.
