Colorado man gets 90 days in jail for abusing sled dogs
FAIRPLAY, Colo. (AP) – A Colorado man who owned a sled-dog racing business has been sentenced to 90 days in jail for abusing more than 100 dogs at his kennel.
KUSA-TV reports that Sam Walker was also sentenced Monday to two years of probation and 48 hours of community service. The Park County man previously pleaded guilty to animal cruelty.
Walker was granted a furlough from jail next week to attend his daughter’s wedding.
Authorities say dozens of dogs starved to death at Walker’s kennel in 2009. A veterinarian who worked on the case says he received dogs that were frozen and covered in dirt.
Walker’s kennel was near Hartsel, about 70 miles southwest of Denver.
