Colorado residents get tax breaks for wildfire mitigation

Coloradans are presented with an opportunity to receive federal income tax deductions for performing wildfire mitigation on private land until 2013 under the Wildfire Mitigation Measures Subcontract.

Colorado landowners may subtract 50 percent of costs incurred from performing wildfire mitigation efforts from their federal taxable income, up to $2,500.

There are a few requirements for the deductions including the taxpayer must own the property, the property must be located in Colorado, the wildfire mitigation measures must be authorized by a community wildfire protection plan, and the property must be located in a wildland-urban interface area.

A wildland-urban interface is where human built structures mix with natural vegetation, which is the case with many residents of Grand County.

Communities in Grand County already have community wildfire protection plans that are available at your local fire station or at the website for the Colorado State Forest Service.

The costs incurred by landowners must be documented by receipt and cannot include inspection fees, in-kind contributions, donations, incentives, cost sharing, and expenses paid by the landowner from previously awarded grants.

This program is one of many land owner assistance programs being offered by the Colorado State Forest Service.

A full list of available programs as well as a list of approved community wildfire protection plans by area is available on the Colorado State Forest Service’s website,
