Colorado State Patrol releases initial investigation results for crash that closed US Highway 40 near Granby

U.S. Highway 40 west of Granby was closed for five hours the evening of Tuesday, March 11, due to a two-vehicle crash involving a GMC Sierra and a Ford Expedition.

The crash took place just after 6 p.m. near milepost 208, and the roadway reopened at about 11 p.m., according to Colorado State Patrol.

A total of four people were transported to a nearby hospital. The driver of the Sierra and the driver of the Expedition both sustained moderate injuries, while the passenger of the Expedition was transported for a serious injury. A child passenger of the Expedition sustained minor injuries.

Colorado State Patrol’s initial investigations show that the Sierra was traveling westbound on U.S. 40 driving on a right-hand curve, while the Expedition was traveling eastbound. The Sierra drove across the eastbound lane into the eastbound shoulder before correcting back into the westbound lane. This caused the Expedition to swerve into the westbound lane to avoid the Sierra.

The front of the Sierra struck the front left side of the Expedition, causing the Sierra to rotate before coming to a final rest on its wheels. The Expedition overturned and came to a rest on its left side.

Colorado State Patrol is still investigating the crash.
