Rocky Mountain National Park’s road crew began plowing Trail Ridge Road on April 19, from the east and west sides of the park. Plow operators are reporting significant snow accumulations. Road crews on the east side are reporting 10 to 14 feet of snow between Many Parks Curve and Rainbow Curve, the most seen in this area for years. The recent snowstorms have brought lots of snow.

Due to this heavy/wet snow, continued winter weather conditions at high elevations, and the potential for avalanches; safety of park staff and visitors is our top priority in clearing the road. Because of these extreme conditions this year, the earliest Trail Ridge Road is expected to open is Friday, May 27, weather permitting. A recorded phone line provides the status of Trail Ridge Road, the number is (970) 586-1222.

Snowshoe and backcountry ski conditions on the east side of the park are excellent spring conditions. Avalanche activity in the backcountry continues to occur, visitors should be aware of changing conditions.
