Sky-Hi News Staff Report

Colorado State Patrol (CSP) released their report of the investigation into the crash in Tabernash on Sept. 3.

According to CSP Public Information Officer, Nathaniel Reid, a 2010 Subaru Legacy driven by Rachelle Stiger, 36 of Monument was traveling westbound on U.S. Highway 40 at approximately milepost 220. A 2013 GMC Yukon driven by John Otten, 34 of Lingle, Wyo. was traveling eastbound at the same location.

The Subaru traveled into the westbound lane and struck the GMC head on.

After impact, the Subaru came to rest in the westbound lanes facing southeast. The GMC traveled off the south edge of the roadway and came to rest facing northwest at the top of a steep embankment.

Stiger was pronounced dead on scene. The two passengers in the Subaru were an 11-year-old female and a six-year-old male, both were airlifted to Denver Health.

Otten was transported to Middle Park Medical Center in Granby, then later airlifted to University Hospital in Denver. A 33-year-old female, three-year-old female, and one-year-old male passengers from the GMC were transported to Middle Park Medical Center with minor injuries.

While the cause of the crash is still under investigation, neither excessive speed nor drug/alcohol use is expected to be contributing factors in this crash, according to CSP.
