Denver court filing costs rise because of new building

DENVER (AP) – Costs for filing or answering a lawsuit in district court, or filing for a divorce have risen to help pay for a new judicial building near downtown Denver.

The costs to file for a divorce is now $230, up from $194 three years ago. Filing a lawsuit costs $224, up from $156. Filing an answer to a lawsuit costs $158, up from $90 in 2007.

The Denver Post reports that most of the fee increases are going toward a state fund for construction of the $258 million Ralph L. Carr Justice Center.

The building is expected to be completed in 2013 and will house the state Supreme Court, Court of Appeals, judicial officers and the attorney general’s office.
