Desire for instant gratification trumped prudence in subprime mortgage mess

To the Editor:

What is the problem? Poor judgment on the part of consumers and mortgage lenders is the problem.

These lenders made poor decisions in their business dealings. They knew that potential homeowners wanted the “American Dream” at any cost. They ignored the risk.

Mortgage consumers chose the immediate gratification path. They wanted the “Dream” and they wanted it now.

They made the decision to go for it. They ignored the risk.

Many people in America, both lenders and consumers, had their heads in the sand. Scarlett O’Hara said it best,

“I will think about this tomorrow.”

Well, suck it up, baby. Tomorrow has arrived.
