Destroying Winter Park murals was bad business

To the editor:

I have thought long and hard about the recent destruction of artwork on the sides of The Shed Restaurant.

I have often run past the building during my morning jog through town admiring the creative historical murals.

In its callous destruction, I am reminded of the Taliban invasion into Afghanistan.

Despite the pleadings of the religious and archeological communities, the ancient religious and inspiring mountain carved Buddas were destroyed without regard to their community value.

While removing Katrina Larson’s beautiful murals is the right of the developer/owner, the action is a mean-spirited gesture with total disregard to the feelings of the community.

A trite gesture of a photos offered by The Winter Park Group of the murals may assuage some, but to many it is a trivial placation lacking any sincerity.

At best it is another developer who lacks good common business horse sense.

The old-time locals can tell you that new entrepreneurs who fail to understand that having a business enterprise without the support of the full-time Winter Park/Fraser Valley is a really dumb business move. This is certainly not a principle of success.

If I may suggest a way of making amends, why doesn’t The Winter Park Group immediately retain Ms. Larson to paint another public mural for the community to enjoy in Hideaway Park?

We are quick to criticize a wrong, but this is also place where people are willing to forgive.
