Eagle County mulls laying off up to 30 employees to balance budget
November 25, 2009
EAGLE, Colo. (AP) – Eagle County commissioners are reviewing a budget proposal for next year that includes cutting 30 full-time jobs.
The proposal also includes more than $1 million in cuts from community programs as the county faces a projected $4.4 million deficit in the general fund by 2012.
The county said Tuesday that the preliminary 2010 budget is 14 percent lower than operating expenditures in 2009.
County officials say sales tax collections are down about 20 percent from last year. Revenues from fees and building permits are also down. Property tax revenue is expected to drop at least 20 percent by 2012.
The county says cutting 30 jobs would lower annual personnel costs by about 7 percent.
