East Grand appoints Phillip Brooks to School Board

Sky-Hi News Staff

The East Grand School District (EGSD) Board of Education has a new member.

Phillip Brooks was appointed by the sitting EGSD Board of Education by acclamation at the last Board meeting on Tuesday Nov. 3. Brooks was one of two individuals who submitted letters of interest to the Board of Education seeking appointment to the Board.

“I’m looking forward to being a part of the East Grand School Board,” stated Brooks. “My wife and I have resided in Grand County for nearly 13 years and are the proud parents of two young children. I have been a managing partner of Home James Transportation since 2011. I’m entering this appointment with an open mind and the guiding principle that the students best interests should always come first.”

An election was previously scheduled this year for three different seats on the Board. The three seats up for election were occupied in the last session by Board President Taunia Shipman, Vice President Donald Scott and Board Member Mike McGinley. Both Shipman and McGinley decided to seek an additional term on the Board while Scott did not. Scott announced his decision not to seek reelection after the deadline for other individuals to petition to enter the election.

This created the potential for a write-in candidacy, however the EGSD received no submissions. With no contested seats and with no formal candidates or write-in candidates for Scott’s vacant seat the election was canceled and Shipman and McGinley were declared elected and the Board officially opened Scott’s seat for appointment.
