Wildfire flares up outside Winter Park
The East Grand Fire Department was dispatched on Tuesday to a small fire burning in some log decks just northwest of the Lakota neighborhood in Winter Park.
The fire was not in the trees, and no structures were involved.
“The fire appeared to start in one of the log decks and spread to the other three due to the close proximity of all of them,” noted Todd Holzwarth, East Grand Fire Chief.
He estimated the affected area was about 100 by 200 feet.
There was lots of smoke from the fire, but its flames were kept to a minimum on the ground, according to firefighters.
Logging operations are happening on U.S. Forest Service land north of Cub Creek, which is north of the Lakote Subdivision, as the agency has been performing small logging operations in the area.
A squad from the U.S. Forest Service has arrived on scene, and operations have been transferred over to the Forest Service, which has crews watching the fire.
In addition to East Grand Fire and the Forest Service, the Grand County Sheriff’s Office and Fraser Winter Park police also responded to the fire.
