East Grand Middle School Brain Bowlers are off to Chicago
June 10, 2011
The 8th grade brain bowl team is going to Chicago. Team members Chris Ciccarelli, Daniel Kopp, Nelson Mitchell, and Will Colley were successful in their fundraising efforts, and will be competing in the Junior National Brain Bowl competition in Chicago from June 11-13.
The boys did various fundraising ventures including: hosting an adult, community brain bowl meet, selling concessions at a track meet, selling ice cream at school, planning a dress down week at school, and soliciting very generous donations from local government, business, and non-profit entities. They would like to thank everyone who participated or donated, for all of their help in making this incredible trip possible.
While in Chicago, they are guaranteed six rounds of competitions against schools from around the country. In order to advance to the finals they must win at least four of their six rounds. If they make the finals, it will be single elimination format. In the end, the team with the highest total points from all the rounds will become the junior national champion.
They have been practicing twice a week for the past two months, and have also been studying all academic subjects outside of school on their own time. This includes playing Jeopardy, doing crossword puzzles, and studying an iPhone app about the presidents. They are confident and hopeful that they will at least make the finals and make Grand County proud.
