East Grand School District superintendent leave pay costs district $22,000

East Grand School District Superintendent Nancy Karas is receiving a $21,544 check from the school district for 88.5 carry-over sick and vacation days that have gone unpaid.
A budget auditor told the district president that the amount remains a liability in the district’s books, but the buyout exceeds the district’s budgeted amount for leave pay.
In a unanimous decision made on Tuesday, board members agreed to pay the liability out of this year’s budget, partially using reserves.
Even though many of the days qualified for the superintendent rate, Karas, a former principal in the district, struck a deal with the board to have the days paid at the principal rate rather than the superintendent rate, saving the district $100 per leave day.
District employees’ unused sick leave is paid to them at a predetermined rate upon retirement.
The payment oversight left a sour taste for at least one board member.
“I’m not sure this is the kind of message we want to send when the accountability committee is looking at cutting $1 million and staff,” said board member Barbara Ahrens. “I understand we have to do it, but I don’t like the message.”
