Elderly siblings rescued after driving into river

PUEBLO, Colo. (AP) – An elderly man and his sister in Pueblo are recovering after the man steered their car into the icy Arkansas River.

Police say 74-year-old Daniel Puente will have to take a new driving test after veering into the river Wednesday. Puente and his 80-year-old sister were in the car near Pueblo’s Riverwalk when he drove into the water.

Passers-by jumped into the river and pulled the pair to safety. Neither was seriously hurt.

Puente told police his brakes failed, but authorities believe the elderly man may have accidentally hit the gas pedal instead of the brakes and have ordered him to take a driving test. He wasn’t ticketed.
