Elizabeth Kurtak: Reduced ski shuttle service in Fraser will hurt workers most

To The Editor:

I was sorry to read that Winter Park Resort is cutting shuttle service to Fraser. I believe this will be inconvenient to guests staying in Fraser, or wanting to visit the area for Safeway, tubing, shopping, etc…

Perhaps the most regrettable impact will be on locals and seasonal employees who live in Fraser. Housing is more affordable the further you get from the ski area, and for folks working entry level and minimum wage jobs, living in Winter Park is simply not an option. This past winter saw temperatures drop to -40 degrees, which really is too cold for walking or hitchhiking.

I would like to propose pay buses as a possible solution. I recently vacationed at a resort that offered day passes, or single ride purchase for the bus, and was grateful to save my feet the extra miles for $4 a day. Is it possible the bus program could be making money instead of being viewed as an expense? Please, consider exploring this option if you haven’t already.
