Fatal tanker crash closes US Highway 50 near Salida

SALIDA, Colo. (AP) – A fatal crash involving a tanker truck has shut down a portion of U.S. Highway 50 near Salida.

The Colorado State Patrol said the semi-tanker rolled Friday while taking a curve in the road, which runs along the Arkansas River. The semi and tanker caught fire and the driver died.

Fuel leaked out of the tanker but the State Patrol said it flowed away from the river. Authorities were still monitoring the river for possible contamination.

The highway between Salida and Texas Creek is expected to remain closed until 5 or 7 p.m.
