Feds raid Texas group that called West Grand part of their own
February 24, 2015
West Grand residents who were concerned about possible annexation into the Republic of Texas can breathe easy.
The Texas-based secessionist group, which has claimed that part of western Grand County falls into its resurrection of the bygone republic, was the target of a federal raid on Monday, Feb. 23, the Houston Chronicle reports.
Local police, sheriffs, and agents of the Texas Rangers and FBI raided the group's "congressional meeting" in Bryan, Texas, after the Republic subpoenaed local residents and a judge to appear before its "court" at the local Veterans of Foreign Wars post, the Chronicle reports.
Ed Brannum, the "General Land Commissioner" for the Republic of Texas, penned a letter to the Grand County Board of Commissioners in 2011, claiming that residents within the Republic's lost borders "have an option" to live in the Republic.
In his letter, Brannum stated that the group needed "a bunch of young people," because the Republic's current champions are comprised mainly of retirees.
The board of commissioners declined to respond to the missive.
