Final details of Snowball hashed out
With the Snowball Music Festival two weeks away, event organizers and various entities in the Fraser Valley have begun final preparations to accommodate an anticipated 10,000 to 12,000 visitors during the March 8-10 weekend.Details surrounding the event including transportation to and from the venue, emergency services, and after-parties and other associated activities are being finalized as the event draws near.TransportationFor those who plan on attending the festival, public transportation options will be available to shuttle concert-goers to and from the venue. Park and ride locations will be at the Colorado Adventure Park, the Fraser Valley Sports Complex, the John Work Rodeo Arena, and additional locations where riders can park throughout Winter Park and Fraser. Shuttles will run to these locations throughout the festival and will operate until 2:30 a.m. each night of the festival. It has yet to be determined if public transit to and from the Granby area will be available as lodging is reportedly nearing capacity in the Fraser Valley and bookings are starting to overflow into Granby.Law enforcement officials are planning to establish three different traffic control points along U.S. Highway 40. They will be located at the intersections of King’s Crossing Road, First Street (the Shell station), and Second Street (the Foundry).”I think it’s pretty fair to expect there will be traffic delays at various times throughout that weekend,” said Fraser-Winter Park Police Chief Glen Trainor.Emergency servicesOfficials from the East Grand Fire Department, Grand County Emergency Medical Services, town public works departments, and law enforcement have been meeting every Wednesday to prepare for the event. They are anticipating 10,000 to 12,000 additional people in the county for the weekend of Snowball, which not only includes the festival goers but also normal skier traffic. The different entities have been collaborating to prepare for the event to ensure the safety of festival-goers as well as county residents. Plans are even being made to adjust to severe weather if it arises during the event. Contingencies are being made, for instance, if weather closes Berthoud Pass.Trainor commented Tuesday morning during the Winter Park Town Council meeting that he is enjoying the challenges of bringing such a large event to the county. While some of the details are still being hammered out, “We are getting there,” Trainor said. “One thing that should be noted is the tremendous collaboration that is taking place throughout the community for this event. There is no way one entity could do this by themselves.”Schedule of the eventSnowball producers have finalized the schedule for the event with the order the artists will perform in each night being released through the event’s website at snowballmusicfestival.com.The concerts start each day at 1 p.m. Headliners for each night start at 9:30 p.m. and end at 11 p.m. Friday’s headlining artist is Big Gigantic, Saturday’s will be Pretty Lights, and Sunday’s will be STS9.The event will have three stages with numerous artists rotating through the stages throughout each day. There will also be an art village with art vendors inside the event as well as a number of food truck vendors that will be serving food and drinks to festival goers. The venue for the event is at the south end of Grand Park just north of the Winter Park town line on the west side of U.S. 40.Other activities at the event include a silent disco, which is a tent where headphones are passed out to dancers that can be tuned to one of two DJ’s, a heat lounge and bar, and big air jumps where paid riders will perform tricks for concert goers.Event promoters are excited to incorporate various artistic elements throughout the event this year, said Carrie Lombardi, the event’s publicist.After-parties and other eventsFive locations around the Town of Winter Park will host parties each night after the concert where an event wristband will be required to gain access. The after-parties will be at the Winter Park Pub, Strip & Tail, Smokin’ Moe’s, The Winter Park Mountain Lodge, and Ullr’s.
