Fire officials have reopened the roads around the Sugarloaf Fire area this weekend after some rain fell over the fire.

Forest Service Roads 138 and 142.1 have been opened by fire officials, though the Darling Creek Trail, the Ute Peak Trail and the Ute Pass Trail are still closed, as well as the Sugarloaf and South Fork Campgrounds.

The fire, which is primarily burning in the Darling Creek drainage just south of Byers Peak Wilderness and roughly 13 miles southwest of Fraser, did receive some rain this week.

Fire crews have also decreased from 37 personnel, one fire engine and two helicopters in July to only 10 personnel and two engines.

“The fire is still smoldering in a small portion of the southwest side of the burn area,” officials said. “Firefighting resources continue to camp out near the fire, monitoring, patrolling and testing pumps and hoses for structure protection purposes daily.”

The fire started on July 28 from a lightning strike. It remains at 1,280 acres and is still 35 percent contained. Officials still estimate that the fire will be contained by the end of August.
