Recent moisture has allowed the reduction of some fire restrictions on the Arapaho National Forest, according to US Forest Service officials.

As of Thursday, restrictions changed from Stage II to Stage I Fire Restrictions. The restrictions to discharging a firearm remain in place on the entire Arapaho Forest, except for licensed hunters pursuing game.

The Stage 1 fire restrictions prohibit building or maintaining a fire or use of charcoal, coal, or wood stoves, except within a developed recreation site (where campers pay a fee).

Additional restrictions include the use explosives, including fireworks.

Smoking is allowed only in an enclosed vehicle or building, a developed recreation site, or while in an area at least three feet in diameter cleared of all flammable materials.

Grand County officials will be reassessing the current Stage 2 fire ban weekly, during Tuesday conference calls with other state and federal agencies.

“It is important that the county and towns all stay consistent with the fire ban restrictions,” said James Newberry, county commissioner.

“Caution is still the best way, and we will constantly reassess.”

Rocky Mountain National Park lifted its complete fire ban earlier this week. Fires are now permitted there within developed campgrounds.

Visitors are encouraged to contact the agency in charge of any lands where they plan to light a campfire or use other than petroleum-based stoves or grills.
