Flight for Life responds to rollover on US 34
A serious rollover accident occurred on US Highway 34 between Granby and Grand Lake Monday morning Sept. 12, resulting in one person being taken via Flight For Life helicopter to a regional healthcare center in northern Colo. with serious injuries.
The accident occurred early Monday morning sometime around 8:30 a.m. and involved a single vehicle, a black 2002 Chevy car, which was traveling towards Grand Lake on US 34 when the accident occurred. According to officials from the Grand County Sheriff’s Office (GCSO) the vehicle was traveling eastbound when it crossed the highway centerline into the oncoming lane. The vehicle did not collide with any oncoming vehicles and rather continued to veer to the far side of the road, eventually going off the side of the highway and down the embankment.
After the car traveled off the highway it rolled at least two times before coming to a rest upside down in the ditch. County officials responded quickly and shut down US 34 for a period of time Monday morning to allow the Flight for Life helicopter to land.
Two individuals, both riding in the vehicle, were injured during the wreck. One party was taken to Middle Park Medical Center – Granby for treatment of minor injuries while the other individual, an 18-year-old Denver male, was taken out of county on Flight for Life. First Responders needed to physically extricate the 18-year-old male from the Chevy car before he was flown out.
Officials were not ready to release names Monday morning but confirmed neither party hurt during the wreck are permanent residents of Grand County. The two were living in Grand County on a temporary basis for work when the accident occurred.
The accident occurred on US 34 near the Blue Bird Motel. The Colorado State Patrol is handling the accident investigation. County agencies responding to the wreck included: Grand Fire Protection District, Grand Lake Fire Protection District, Grand County EMS and the GCSO.
