Florence Ella Mae Sutherland

Kind, generous and industrious with unstoppable good cheer throughout her life, Florence Ella Mae (McCormick) Sutherland died from cancer on May 30 at her home in Denver.

The Sutherland family’s strong ties to the Grand Lake area stem from a beloved lake home and longtime devotion to the sport of sailing through the Grand Lake Yacht Club.

Sutherland grew up with two sisters and four brothers in Thermopolis, Wyo. After graduating from nursing school in Rochester, Minn., she married Jerome D. Sutherland, M.D. in Denver and they partnered through 48 cherished years.

She is survived by her dear husband Jerry, sister Carol Hale, three sons and daughters in law; Jason and Bonnie, Toby and Susie, Michael and Annika; six grandchildren with one more expected in August, and a lifetime of beloved friends.

“She will be missed in so many ways,” reads a message from the Yacht Club to fellow members, “a wonderful sense of humor, an optimistic and fun-loving attitude, and a loving mother and wife to a strong and thriving family.”

A memorial service will take place at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, June 4, at Washington Park United Methodist Church, 1955 E. Arizona Ave., Denver, with reception to follow at a nearby location.

The family asks that in lieu of flowers, please consider a charity of choice.
