A Florida man died in Grand County of natural causes on Sunday while vacationing in the Rabbit Ears Pass area.

According to Grand County Coroner Brenda Bock, Timothy Pitzen, 53, of Davie Florida died Sunday afternoon of heart failure. Pitzen was vacationing with friends in the high country and was at the Dumont Lake parking lot in the Rabbit Ears Pass area preparing for a snowmobile ride when he collapsed. Authorities from the Grand County Sheriff’s Office (GCSO) provided details.

According to GCSO Public Information Officer Lt. Dan Mayer Pitzen and at least one friend were at the Dumont Lake parking lot preparing for a snowmobile ride when Pitzen collapsed. A nurse from Yampa, Colo. happened to be on scene at the time of Pitzen’s collapse and began administering CPR immediately. Authorities received initial calls for aid shortly after noon on Sunday Feb. 7.

First responders and a Flight-for-Life helicopter were dispatched to Dumont Lake but Pitzen was pronounced dead at 2:50 p.m., before he could be transported away from the scene. According to Coroner Bock Pitzen had an extensive history of heart related health problems. Pitzen’s body will not be autopsied and plans have been made for his cremation.
