Fraser pot shop to go recreational

FRASER — Dan Volpe, the owner of Serene Wellness Fraser, the only medical marijuana shop in Grand County, is beginning to pursue incorporating a recreational component to the shop.

“I’m sure I am going to do it in some capacity,” Volpe said. “I just want to make sure it is done in the right way.”

Volpe is undecided whether he wants to make the shop into a recreational shop where he would offer discounts to his existing medical marijuana patients — which he currently does at his recreational marijuana shop in Empire — or make the shop into a combination of medical and recreational.

Volpe says that the latter of the options would require him to maintain two operations including maintaining two marijuana tracking systems, which are mandated by the state and cost money to implement.

“I’m torn about it,” he said.

Volpe said he is in no hurry to decide what to do as he has already missed the peak traffic of the ski season due to the Fraser Board of Trustees delaying its decision to approve recreational marijuana shops in the town until after the first of the year.

Volpe will first have to gain approval and a license from the state as well as from the town of Fraser, though the Fraser Board of Trustees said during a March 26 meeting that they would consider refunding him a portion of the $5,000 fee he paid at the beginning of the year to maintain his license to sell medical marijuana in Fraser if he were to apply for a license to sell recreational marijuana in the town.
