Fraser Valley Elementary project in the works
A new project involving fencing and an updated entryway will soon be under way at Fraser Valley Elementary School.
The town of Winter Park recently made plans to donate up to $66,000 toward the improvement project for the school. The money comes from Winter Park’s School Impact Fee Fund, which is set aside for capital outlays to improve the experience of students from Winter Park who attend schools in the East Grand School District.
The improvement project has two aspects: functional and aesthetic. For functionality and safety, a fence will be built around the eastern and northern edges of the parking lot. Also, steps will be taken to improve the front entryway of the school.
The fence will go alongside the east of the parking lot, from the bus drop-off point to the front entryway. It may also continue along the north side, although exactly where or how far is undecided, due to the necessity of multiple car drop-off areas. The purpose of the fence is to protect the children from traffic and to create better-defined boundaries around the school and drop-off zones.
“We’re looking forward to getting it going. I think it will improve the traffic flow, the safety of the students, and better define our drop-off and pick-up zones,” said James Chamberlin, Fraser Valley Elementary principal. “We appreciate the collaboration and support of the Winter Park Town Council.”
Improvements to the front entryway include getting rid of weeds and replacing them with decorative pavers.
“I’ve been over there lately,” said Winter Park Town Manager Drew Nelson. “There are some weeds poking out of the ground, and some other things over there that we [the Town Council] didn’t necessarily think were representative of the students we sent to school there.”
Though a date is yet to be set for construction, it has been officially approved by both the Winter Park Town Council and the East Grand Board of Education.
