Fraser Valley Elementary School has a great volunteer opportunity
December 4, 2008
To the Editor:
If you’re looking for a volunteer opportunity that is fun and rewarding but doesn’t take loads of time, consider the Reading Buddies Program at Fraser Valley Elementary School.
Elizabeth Baum, who has selflessly headed up the program for several years, says that there is a dire need for more Buddies during the 7:30-8a.m. time slot on Thursdays (there are other time slots available as well).
I have been a Reading Buddy for four years and it’s a great way to start my day. I arrive each week a few minutes ahead of time, pick up my student from his/her class, and spend a magical half-hour teaching reading skills to someone who looks forward to this time.
This is an easy way to make a difference in our community and a chance to not only make a new pint-size friend but to steer that friend to success through literacy.
An orientation is provided, but the most important requirement is a caring personality and a warm smile. Some volunteers keep the same Reading Buddy for years, while other volunteers enjoy meeting a new friend each year.
Please consider being a Reading Buddy this school year. It’s a holiday gift that costs nothing, is truly appreciated and keeps on giving. To find out more about the program, contact Elizabeth at 726-9806 or by e-mail: email@example.com
