The Winter Park/Fraser Chamber of Commerce is trying something new this year ” a scavenger hunt that takes people throughout Winter Park searching for prizes.

It’s called geocaching (pronounced geo-cashing), and it’s good, clean fun for those who like treasure hunts. On Saturday, there will be four different caches set up throughout the Winter Park area. With the help of GPS tracking devices, participants can find the “treasures” and receive prizes.

“We just thought it would be a fun winter event that guests would enjoy,” said Gina Hallisey of the Chamber.

Geocaching, basically a high-tech scavenger hunt, is popular among owners of handheld GPS (Global Positioning System) units. The electronic devices can determine your location ” within a four foot diameter ” and be used to navigate from one spot to another.

For the Winter Park geocaching event, people can go to Grand Sports in Winter Park to pick up a map of the coordinates to the caches. There will be different levels of difficulty ” one beginner and three intermediate caches. For those who don’t have a GPS system, the devices can be rented from Grand Sports ” but if people have their own equipment, they can come to the Winter Park Visitor Center for the map.

Once people find a cache, they should take what’s inside it, leave something in it, and write something in the logbook. Prizes include T-shirts, water bottles ” “something fun to remember your visit,” Hallisey said.
