Free Chronic Pain Self-Management Class offered in Granby
GRANBY — A program to help people deal with the challenges of living with chronic pain will be held on Wednesdays from July 13-Aug. 17 at the Granby Library Community Room, 55 Zero St. The free six-week class meets from 2-4:30 p.m. and is open to the community and health professionals interested in learning about chronic disease self-management program (CDSMP) curricula.
Chronic Pain Self-Management is a self-management program developed at Stanford University. Classes are highly participative, where mutual support and success build the participants’ confidence in their ability to manage their health and maintain active and fulfilling lives.
Anyone who is dealing with ongoing pain and health professionals who are interested in learning about CDSMP are encouraged to participate. Friends and family are also encouraged to attend.
The class meets once per week for six weeks. Each session is 2½ hours. Topics covered assist with overall health and well-being including:
• Techniques to deal with fatigue, frustration, isolation and poor sleep
• Setting weekly goals
• Exercise tips for maintaining and improving strength, flexibility and endurance
• Managing medications
• Communicating effectively with family, friends and health professionals
• Managing activity and rest levels
• How to evaluate new treatments
