Middle Park’s Brian Macchione continued his winning ways with a quarterfinal win over Logan Longworth of Weld Central by a pin (1:45) in the 195-pound class at the Colorado State High School Wrestling Tournament on Friday morning at the Pepsi Center in Denver. In his semifinal match on Friday evening Macchione pinned Kagen Hennig of Berthoud (2:38) to advance to the championship match on Saturday evening where he will face Walker Gonzales of Valley.
Middle Park’s Adam Visconti advanced to the semifinals of the 120-pound class by defeating Anthony Contreraz of Sheridan 8-2 in the quarterfinals on Friday morning. Visconti then faced top-seeded A.J. Salazar of Dolores Huerta in the semifinals on Friday evening and lost by a technical fall 18-2. Visconti moves into the consolation bracket, but has guaranteed himself a podium spot. Visconti will face the winner of the bout between Ethan Coombs of Centauri and Austin Van Hooker of Mead in the consolation semifinals on Saturday morning.
West Grand’s Daniel Terwilliger saw his first trip to the state tournament come to an end with a loss in the first consolation round to Michael Hoops of Del Norte by technical fall (18-1).
Rebecca Bolen of Middle Park finished in 10th place of the girls slalom at the Colorado State High School Ski Championships on Friday at Beaver Creek in Avon. Middle Park’s Natasha Stenicka was 29th, Sabina Ligas was 31st, Lexi Sutcliffe finished 43rd, Brenna Barnes placed 52nd and Kelsey Fagan did not finish. As a team the Middle Park girls placed sixth with 127 points.
Zack Schult of Middle Park finished in ninth place of the boys slalom. Middle Park’s Cody Charland was 50th and Dominic Isaacs did not finish. As a team the Middle Park boys placed 10th with 83 points.
Seraphina Smith was the top finisher for Middle Park placing 20th (22:49.5) in the girls 5km classic race at the Colorado State High School Ski Championships at Maloit Park in Minturn on Friday. Linnea Zink finished 23rd (23:37.6), Elly Zietz was 26th (24:04.0), Jenna Curran placed 28th (24:09.0) and Amelia Clancy was 34th (25:02.1). As a team the Middle Park girls placed seventh with 127 points.
Steve Simmons was the top finisher for Middle Park taking 17th place (19:41.7) just ahead of teammate Taber Miyauchi in 18th (19:50.0). Cole Conger finished 24th (20:09.6) and Daniel Kopp placed 34th (20:40.4). As a team the Middle Park boys placed fifth scoring 139 points.
After tying the game late in the fourth quarter the West Grand Lady Mustangs were not able to complete the comeback as they lost to North Park 43-37 on Friday in Kremmling. West Grand hosts Meeker on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. in Kremmling in their final regular season game before the district playoffs start on Tuesday.
West Grand took the lead early and never looked back as they handily defeated North Park 67-33 on Friday evening in Kremmling. The Mustangs will host Meeker at 4 p.m. in Kremmling on Saturday in their final regular season game before the district playoffs begin on Tuesday.
