Friends of the Grand County Library holds annual meeting

Seven “Volunteers of the Year” were honored at the Annual Meeting of the Friends of the Grand County Library, Oct. 24. Dennis Carpenter, Marla Gall, Grace Hammond, Jane Kemp, Tish Linke, Diane Mahoney, and Jill Miles were recognized for their work at one of the five libraries in Grand County. Their varied efforts included book sorting, construction assistance, and planting flowers outside the library.

Treasurer Marla Gall informed the members that this year the Friends have raised over $40,000 for use by the county libraries.

The Friends are celebrating their 25th anniversary as a fund-raising organization for the Grand County Library. Guest speakers were Susan Booker, former executive director for the Grand County Library District, and Carol Schroer, former Hot Sulphur Springs librarian. Booker and Schroer shared stories of local libraries in the 1980s, in cramped quarters, without the convenience of computers, but with the enthusiastic support of the community, including some prisoners at the jail in Hot Sulphur. Following the meeting and presentation, attendees enjoyed carrot cake and a chance to share memories and plans for the future of the organization.
