Glenn Bakken: GOP tax plan favors rich at expense of the middle class
To the Editor:
Not long ago, our president spoke about taxes: “We’re going to close tax loopholes that have allowed the truly wealthy to avoid paying their fair share. In practice, those loopholes made it possible for millionaires to pay nothing, while a bus driver was paying 10 percent of his salary, and that’s crazy.”
This quote is from Ronald Reagan in 1985.
The Republican Tea Party wants tax cuts for the rich and not for the middle class. Since the Bush tax cuts, it has been documented that the rich have been job-destroyers, not job creators. The rich hoarded their money instead of investing it in our economy. This is the same party that wants to abolish Medicare, Social Security and public education.
In states that they control, we’re seen Republican efforts to limit Americans’ right to vote. At the debates, they booed our soldiers and cheered for Americans to die if they didn’t have health insurance. And in the Republican-controlled U.S. House of Representatives, they gave the finger to the unemployed by shrugging off the president’s jobs bill.
