Glenn Bakken: Restoring America
To the Editor:
Republicans want to restore America to the failed policies of Bush/Cheney.
The GOP would double down on tax cuts for the rich and no regulation of Wall Street. These are the same policies that drove our economy into the ditch and killed 8 million jobs. They would rather give tax breaks to millionaires and billionaires than put our construction workers back to work rebuilding America.
The staggering economic inequality that led to the Occupy Wall Street movement is no accident. It has been fueled by the GOP’s all-out war on behalf of the rich. Today, a billionaire in the top 400 pays less than 17 percent of his income in taxes – five percentage points less than a bus driver earning $26,000 a year.
“The Republican Party has totally abdicated its job in our democracy, which is to act as the guardian of fiscal discipline and responsibility,” says David Stockman, who served as budget director under President Reagan. “They’re on an anti-tax jihad – one that benefits the prosperous class.”
