Government spending, not assessments, is the problem with Grand County taxes
Last Wednesday’s Sky- Hi Daily News ran a long article about the higher property tax bills this year. Much of the article referred to the large increase in property tax assessments last year.
However, the most important part of the story was in a gray box on page 2.
In 2006, all government bodies in Grand County spent $35,425,746 and in 2007 those same government bodies spent $46,759,027.
That is an increase of $11,333,281 in one year, a 32 percent increase in spending. Nobody’s income went up 32 percent that year.
If government continues to increase spending in double-digit percentages, it won’t be long before the poor and middle class will be pushed out of Grand County.
