Granby hopes to attract community college

GRANBY – East Grand Middle School’s eighth-graders are focussing on higher education.

Civics and U.S. history teacher Abby Loberg’s students this year hope to attract a community college to Grand County as the subject of a year-long civics project.

Involving about 80 students, it’s the seventh year Loberg’s classes have taken on a community-minded project aiming to somehow better the lives of Grand County residents.

Loberg’s fourth-hour class chose the topic that ultimately a team of adult judges chose as timely and worthy of student energies.

Students presented their potential topics to judges via presentations. Ideas rejected were a teen nightclub – “Every year that comes up,” Loberg said – a Main Street Granby facelift, and a Grand County transportation system.

Civics classes concentrate on the project between units of study throughout the year. Because public awareness is a component of the project, students have worked on letters to the newspaper editor as well as political cartoons concerning the community-college topic.

They’ve been doing research about what kinds of majors and course offerings would be suitable for a local community college as well as the advantages of attending a community college.

One is cost. A community college is one-third the cost of a four-year state school, they found.

And local high school graduates desiring to stay close to home post-graduation would have the opportunity to work toward degrees in Grand County. Such degrees could be tailored to Grand County – in example tourism, forestry, environmentalism, culinary arts and outdoor recreation.

Loberg is hoping her classes may work in tandem with a group of citizens in the Kremmling area, who have a similar goal of attracting a community college to that area.
