A fatal motorcycle crash occurred in Grand County in the early morning hours of Sunday, Sept. 21.

The motorcycle driver, 33-year-old Jonathan Mathern of Granby, died at the scene just after midnight.

According to information received from the Colorado State Patrol, Mathern was westbound on US Highway 34 near Lake Granby on a 2001 Honda VTR 1000 motorcycle. Mathern failed to negotiate a curve and his vehicle went off the left side of the road. Mathern was ejected from the motorcycle, which rolled almost two times.

The motorcycle collided with large rocks located beside the road and continued on into Lake Granby. After being ejected from the vehicle, Mathern also collided with the large rocks, according to the State Patrol.

Drugs and alcohol are not suspected as being contributing factors in the crash. Excessive speed is being investigated in relation to the accident.
