A Granby police officer was fired and arrested on Wednesday, Dec. 15, charged with one class 3 felony count of exploitation of a child and two class 6 felony counts of exploitation of a child, according to Granby Police Chief Bill Housley.

The chief did not provide details about the extent of the 35-year-old officer’s relations with the 16-18-year-old female Middle Park High School junior.

Housley said the Granby Police Department first learned of the suspected criminal conduct on Dec. 7.

The information instigated both an internal and criminal investigation at the department.

Sanchez was suspended from the department on Dec. 8 and was being held in the Grand County Jail in lieu of a $20,000 bond. He bonded out late Thursday.

For the criminal investigation, the Granby Police Department sought assistance from the Colorado Bureau of Investigation, Housley said in statements released on Thursday.

Sanchez was arrested on Wednesday by Housley and Granby Police Sgt. Jim Kraker.

That same day, Sanchez was terminated from the force. An internal investigation concluded that Sanchez had violated Granby Police Department policies, Housley said.

Sanchez is married and the father of four school-aged children.

“We’re disheartened and deeply disappointed and embarrassed that something like this could happen,” Housley said. “As difficult as this is, I think we dealt with it efficiently and quickly and took disciplinary action that needed to be taken.”
