Grand County building official Scott Penson resigns

Grand County Building Department head Scott Penson has announced his resignation.

Penson announced his resignation, effective June 10, in a letter to Grand County Manager Lurline Underbrink-Curran dated Tuesday, May 27.

“Working for Grand County has been a positive experience and one for which I am grateful,” Penson stated in his resignation letter. “I have gained experience here and have enjoyed working with you and my colleagues in Grand County Government.”

Penson’s department has been at the center of an embezzlement scandal since it announced that $500,000 was missing in October 2013. Former building department employee Brigid Irish has been charged with over 900 counts of embezzlement in relation to the case.

County commissioners announced in May 27 meeting notes that, athough the sheriff’s office had found no illegal activity by Penson, he had failed “to perform all of the duties of a department head.”

Reached on Thursday, Commissioner Gary Bumgarner said he could not comment, citing a “personnel issue.”
