Grand County hazards plan update available for review

Special to the Sky-Hi News

Wildfires, drought and floods have been causing devastating impacts in Colorado this year. Would you like to learn more about what Grand County is doing to minimize the impacts of these and other hazards?

A draft of Grand County’s updated “Multi-Hazard Mitigation Plan” is being made available for public review and comment.

The Grand County Multi-Hazard Mitigation Plan was first completed in 2008 and is undergoing its required five-year update.

The Plan assesses risks posed by natural and manmade hazards, identifies ways to reduce those risks, and allows Grand County and participating jurisdictions to maintain eligibility for mitigation funding from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

A Hazard Mitigation Planning Committee that includes representatives from the County, Fraser, Granby, Grand Lake, Kremmling, Hot Sulphur Springs, Winter Park, and other local special districts is currently updating the Plan with assistance from a consultant. During the Plan update process, the committee has revisited and updated the Plan’s vulnerability assessment, goals and objectives, and mitigation projects.

The committee is now seeking public comment and input on the draft plan update.

The comment period started on Sept. 25 and will continue until Oct. 4, 2013. The plan can be accessed at the following website:

Hardcopies will also be available for review at the Grand County Administration Building in Hot Sulphur and at all county town halls.
