The YMCA Kids program offers ski instruction for beginners and more accomplished skiers ages 5-15, skiing games, winter nature activities, and ends with a Nordic Ski Festival the last Friday. The program operates Jan. 7-Feb. 27 on both Friday and Sunday from 1-2:30 p.m. The Friday program gives more progressive lessons. Equipment and trail pass are provided. Call Christine Lee at YMCA Nordic Center 887-2152 ext. 4173 for further information and to register. Equipment is provided but please arrive 30 minutes early. Parents are encouraged to help. YMCA offers free skiing for Grand County locals on Wednesdays. Call the XC Shop for sales on special equipment purchases. Colorado Biathlon Sprints are Jan. 2. For more information go to coloradobiathlon.org. The informal Grand Nordic Thursday evening workouts begin Jan. 6 with warm-up at 6 p.m. and workouts at 6:30 p.m. These Thursday evening sprints are open to all Grand Nordic members. Save the date March 5 for the Snow Mountain Stampede Marathon – 42K, 21K, 10K, and kids races.

The Friday Fun Kid’s Cross-Country Ski Program at Devil’s Thumb Ranch on Friday’s 10-11:30 a.m. run Jan. 7 through March 11. Ski, play on skis, have fun with skis! Hot cocoa to follow in the Broad Axe Barn.



Ages: 2-12; most of the kids are 2-6 years old.

Fee: $20 for the entire 10 weeks ($2 per week) to cover hot chocolate. Equipment rental, instruction and trail pass provided by Devil’s Thumb Ranch. Meet outside the Broad Axe Barn on the entry to the trail system. Those who need to check out equipment will want to be at the rental counter well before 10 a.m.

Devil’s Thumb is holding a ski-joring clinic on Jan. 9 at 10 a.m. Call 970-726-8231 to reserve your space. Rental equipment is available for your dog.

All Grand County kids can ski free on Fridays with rentals. Grand Lake Elementary School is now open on Fridays so ski lessons are coordinated through the School and the Recreation Department. Call 970-627-8008 for more information.

Middle Park High School competed with over 20 racers on a snowy course at Minturn on Dec. 18. Top finisher was Senior Samantha Berggren as third high school girl. Results are not yet official and will be posted here next week and on http://www.grandnordic.org. MPHS races next on Jan. 8 with a mass start 5 km Freestyle at Steamboat. East Grand Middle School season begins after the Christmas break.
