Grand County Nordic ski areas await more snow

Cross-country skiers are still waiting for the “big dump” in Grand County so they can start to enjoy their sport this season.

Grand County’s three major Nordic centers are open this Thanksgiving holiday, but their trail systems are not yet operational because of the lack of snow.

The Nordic Center at Snow Mountain Ranch-YMCA of the Rockies, which is open daily from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., reports that it does have 5 kilometers of packed trail on its Blue Ridge Trail, which is currently rated as “advanced and for rock skiing only.”

To reach it, skiers must drive to the trailhead at the “Waterfall,” park and then hike up the trail to the snow. For more information, call 887-2152, ext. 4173.

Devil’s Thumb Ranch Nordic Center is also open daily from 8:30 to 5 p.m. However, none of its 100 kilometers of trails are currently open. For more information, call 887-8231.

The Grand Lake Touring Center will be open 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. this Friday, Nov. 28, through Sunday, Nov. 30, to sell season passes. None of its 35 kilometers of trails are open. For more information or to purchase a season pass over the phone, call 627-8008.
